PR and Communications for Startups – 10 Questions

When PR pays off for startups – and how it works.

Updated: September 2026

1. When is PR worth it for a startup?

For concrete occasions such as a launch, funding round, new customers or studies – and whenever visibility with customers, investors or applicants matters.

2. What is a press release?

A short text with real news sent to journalists. It answers who, what, when, where and why.

3. How do you announce a funding round?

With a coordinated press release, quotes from founders and investors, photos and a fixed date, often with advance information to selected media.

4. What is media training?

Training for interviews, panels and presentations so founders come across clearly and confidently on camera and on stage.

5. Do I need a crisis plan?

As soon as you handle customer data, financial products or health topics, a simple crisis plan makes sense: who speaks, who decides, how people are informed.

6. What does ongoing press work cost?

Common retainers range from about €1,500 to €5,000 per month depending on scope and markets. Single releases are also available as projects.

7. Does PR guarantee coverage?

No. Good agencies increase the chances with relevant stories and contacts, but they cannot guarantee coverage.

8. What are stakeholders?

Everyone who matters to your startup: investors, customers, partners, authorities, community and employees. Stakeholder management maintains these relationships deliberately.

9. What are public affairs?

Communication with politics and authorities, for example in regulated sectors such as fintech, health or energy.

10. How do I measure PR success?

By number and quality of articles, target media reached, reach, website visits and enquiries after publication.

Would you be willing to pay part of the fee in company shares (equity)? Some agencies work with startups partly in exchange for a stake – this can lower the cash amount. Whether it is possible is always up to the agency.
